At Vancouver Island Naturopathic Clinic Inc., we recognize that neurodivergence is a natural and valuable form of human diversity. Our approach is neuroaffirmative, strengths-based, and individualized. We provide screening support, integrative care planning, and collaborative coordination for individuals who identify as neurodivergent or who are exploring whether ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), or related conditions may be part of their experience.

We aim to create a safe, respectful clinical environment where patients feel understood and supported.

Our Neuroaffirmative Approach

Neuroaffirmative care acknowledges that neurological differences are not deficits to be “fixed,” but variations in brain function that may require tailored support.

Our care focuses on:

  • Strengths-based assessment

  • Functional impact in daily life

  • Emotional regulation and nervous system support

  • Executive functioning support

  • Sensory awareness and environmental adaptations

  • Referral for collaborative care when formal psychological assessment is indicated

We work within our scope as licensed Naturopathic Doctors in British Columbia and collaborate with psychologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, and other regulated professionals when appropriate.

ADHD Screening & Support

We provide structured ADHD screening for adolescents and adults using validated questionnaires and clinical history. Our ADHD support may include:

  • Review of developmental, academic, and occupational history

  • Assessment of executive functioning patterns

  • Screening tools appropriate for age and presentation

  • Discussion of differential considerations (e.g., anxiety, trauma, sleep, mood concerns)

  • Supportive documentation when referral for formal psychoeducational or psychological assessment is indicated

  • Integrative treatment planning within naturopathic scope

Where appropriate, we coordinate with a patient’s primary care provider or specialist regarding medication discussions. We do not replace formal psychological diagnostic assessments but can assist patients in navigating next steps. Naturopathic Physician's cannot prescribe stimulant medications. Referrals to an MD or NP will be facilitated if required.

Autism Spectrum Screening & Support

Autism often presents differently in girls, women, and high-masking individuals. We offer supportive screening conversations and structured intake to help individuals explore whether ASD may be relevant.

Our approach includes:

  • Developmental and social communication history

  • Sensory profile discussion

  • Screening questionnaires

  • Review of masking, burnout, and fatigue patterns

  • Identification of functional challenges and strengths

  • Referral guidance for comprehensive diagnostic assessment when appropriate

  • Integrative treatment planning within the naturopathic scope

We provide supportive documentation and collaborate with psychologists or specialists for formal diagnostic evaluation where needed.

Screening for Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditions

Many individuals with ADHD or ASD experience co-occurring concerns. We provide screening and integrative support planning for:

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Depression

  • Emotional dysregulation and sensory challenges

  • Hypermobiltiy, digestive and immune concerns
  • PMDD

  • Trauma-related symptoms

  • Sleep disturbance

  • Burnout and chronic stress

Care plans are individualized and may include lifestyle support, nutritional strategies, counselling referrals, nervous system regulation techniques, and collaboration with other healthcare providers. We do not provide emergency psychiatric services. Patients requiring urgent mental health support will be directed to appropriate emergency resources.

Low Sensory & Accessible Appointments

We understand that traditional medical environments can be overwhelming.

Upon request, we offer:

  • Quiet-time bookings

  • Reduced sensory stimulation in clinic rooms

  • Clear written summaries after visits

  • Flexible communication preferences

Our goal is to reduce barriers to care and create an environment that supports nervous system regulation.

Virtual Care Options

We provide secure virtual visits for patients who prefer or require remote care. Virtual appointments may be appropriate for screening discussions, follow-up visits, and integrative care planning. In-person visits are available when physical examination or in-clinic treatments are indicated.

Collaborative & Integrated Care

Neurodivergent care is most effective when collaborative. When appropriate, we may recommend:

  • Formal psychoeducational assessment

  • Psychological diagnostic evaluation

  • Occupational therapy

  • Speech-language pathology

  • Registered counselling support

  • Primary care or psychiatric consultation

We support patients in understanding their options and navigating referral pathways.
